Give Your Deck a Second Life
Sun, snow, and rain wear down every deck over time. Boards turn gray, the stain peels, and the wood starts soaking up water instead of shedding it. The good news is that a worn-looking deck usually doesn’t need to be replaced. In most cases it just needs to be professionally refinished.
At KRC Roofing & Siding, we strip away years of weathering, prep the surface the right way, and apply a quality stain and sealer that protects the wood. The result is a deck that looks close to new and is ready for many more seasons. It costs a fraction of what a replacement would.

Signs Your Deck Needs Refinishing

Gray or faded boards
UV rays have broken down the wood’s surface and color.

Peeling or flaking stain
The old finish has failed and is no longer protecting the wood.

Water soaks in instead of beading
If water darkens the boards right away, the sealer is gone.

Mildew, algae, or dark stains
Moisture is sitting on the surface and feeding growth.

Rough, splintering boards
The surface fibers have dried out and lifted.

It's been 2–3 years since the last stain
Most wood decks need a fresh coat on that schedule.
Try the water test. Sprinkle a little water on your deck. If it beads up, your sealer is still working. If it soaks in within a few minutes, it’s time to refinish.
Our Deck Refinishing Services
Deep Cleaning and Washing
We remove dirt, mildew, algae, and old residue with cleaners made for decks. We use pressure settings that are safe for wood, so the grain isn’t damaged.

Stain Stripping
Old, peeling finishes are stripped off so the new stain bonds evenly and lasts longer.

Sanding and Surface Prep
We sand away gray fibers, rough spots, and splinters to open the grain for a smooth, even finish.

Deck Staining
We apply clear, semi-transparent, or solid stains in the color of your choice. Each coat goes on evenly across boards, railings, and stairs.

Deck Sealing
A protective sealer blocks moisture, UV damage, and mildew to keep the wood from cracking, warping, and rotting.

Railing, Stair, and Fence Refinishing
We finish the whole outdoor space so everything matches, not just the deck floor.

Composite Deck Cleaning
Composite boards don’t need stain, but they still collect dirt, mold, and stains. We deep-clean composite decks to restore their original look.

Deck Refinishing FAQs
How often should I refinish my deck?
Most wood decks in Iowa need to be re-stained and sealed every 2–3 years. Decks in full sun or with heavy foot traffic may need it sooner. Solid stains typically last longer than clear or semi-transparent finishes.
How much does deck refinishing cost?
The price depends on the size of your deck, its condition, how much stripping and sanding it needs, and the type of stain. Railings and stairs add time. We provide a free, itemized estimate after inspecting your deck.
How long does it take to refinish a deck?
Most decks take 2–4 days. That covers cleaning, drying time, sanding, staining, and curing. Weather can shift the schedule, since wood must be dry before stain is applied.
When is the best time of year to stain a deck?
Late spring through early fall, on dry days with mild temperatures. Avoid staining in direct midday heat or when rain or overnight frost is in the forecast.
Can you stain a composite deck?
Composite decking generally isn’t designed to be stained. Instead, we deep-clean composite decks to remove dirt, mold, and stains and restore their original look.
What if some boards are damaged?
We’ll point them out during the inspection. We can replace damaged boards or make other repairs before refinishing, so the whole deck is finished at once.
How soon can I use my deck after staining?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24–48 hours. Wait a few days before moving furniture and grills back. We’ll give you specific guidance based on the product we use.
